“Back to school”… those first few weeks of getting adjusted are hard for everyone, but for some students with disabilities, transitions are tougher. Transitioning from grade to grade can be made easier with preparation.
Consider what has been difficult in the past and what activities you do at home to prepare your child for a change. Many children with disabilities benefit from timers, reminders, social stories, schedules, and other visual supports.
Transition planning for the start of a new school year can also be part of an IEP, outlining an annual goal, specific responsibilities of team members and timelines.
